Movie Review: Diangkat dari novel yang berjudul sama karya Agnes Danovar, film AYAH MENGAPA AKU BERBEDA penuh dengan keprihatinan dan derai air mata. Dari awal film ini mengambil tema kesedihan. Angel (Dinda Hauw) terlahir sebagai seorang gadis tuna rungu. Hari lahirnya menjadi hari kematian ibunya. Kematian istri yang dicintai dan dikagumi, membuat ayah Angel, Suryo (Surya Saputra) terpuruk.

Kehidupan Angel dijalani bersama nenek (Rima Melati) dan ayahnya. Meskipun tuna rungu, Angel tumbuh menjadi gadis cantik, pintar, dan berbakat. Ia mempunyai bakat yang diturunkan oleh orangtuanya yaitu sebagai pianis. Sekolah tempatnya belajar, menyarankan agar Suryo menyekolahkan Angle ke sekolah umum agar bakatnya tidak sia-sia. Merekapun pindah ke Jakarta.

Di sekolah luar biasa, Angel tidak pernah merasa berbeda. Karena
selalu mendapatkan perlakuan yang sama dengan teman-temannya. Begitupun di rumah. Tapi di sekolah baru, ia merasa tak semua orang nyaman dengan keberadaannya. Tuna rungunya menjadi alasan Angel dibully oleh teman barunya di kelas, Maya. Namun, di kelas Angel juga bertemu Hendra, yang kemudian menjadi sahabat Angel. Ada juga Martin, cowok incaran Maya yang diam-diam lebih memperhatikan Angel.

Yang paling menyenangkan bagi Angel adalah adanya ibu guru musik yang mengetahui bakatnya bermain piano. Angel diajak langsung bergabung ke kelompok musik. Sialnya, Maya juga bergabung di kelompok musik yang sama. Tak terima Angel masuk sebagai saingan, Maya memojokkan Angel.

Perlakukan Maya terhadap Angel, membuat Suryo marah. Saat marah, ayah Angel mengalami masalah jantung. Pendapatan tak seberapa dari toko roti keluarga yang ia kelola, menghambat pengobatannya, sehingga Angel berusaha menambah penghasilan keluarga dengan menjadi pianis sebuah cafe. Di cafe inilah, ia merajut cinta dengan Ferly (Sinaga), pegawai cafe tersebut. Ferly menerima kekurangan Angel sebagai kelebihan, sehingga hati mereka mudah bersatu.'

Suatu hari, Angel lolos seleksi kompetisi untuk tampil sebagai pianis di konser langsung di sebuah stasiun TV. Sayangnya, di hari-H, ayah Angel mendapat serangan jantung yang kesekian kalinya. Angel gamang untuk tetap berangkat atau menunggui ayahnya. Sesudah diyakinkan ayahnya, Angel berangkat. Namun, sebelum tampil Maya menganiaya Angel lagi. Maya merusak penampilan Angel tepat sebelum waktunya naik panggung. Saat orang-orang yang dikasihi meninggalkan Angel, ia hampir menyerah. Angel mencoba bertahan dengan kekurangan dan
kelebihan yang dikaruniakan Tuhan padanya.

MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: Cruelty, avarice, jealousy, deception, insecurity and lust… all those vices and more are nakedly revealed in The Eye of the Storm, director Fred Schepisi’s handsome adaptation of the Patrick White novel.

There’s a lot to admire about Schepisi’s first Australian film since 1988’s Evil Angels (aka A Cry in the Dark) and his first venture since the acclaimed 2005 HBO two-part telemovie Empire Falls.

The performances from Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis, the rarely seen Helen Morse, John Gaden and Robyn Nevin are exquisite. 

But they’re impersonating characters whose faults and foibles are painfully obvious and the film invites the audience to enter a world – Sydney’s salubrious Eastern Suburbs in 1972 – where almost no one could be described as a lovable screw-up.

It’s an intelligent, well-crafted and, at times, moving and waspishly funny movie for which the level of enjoyment and engagement will probably depend on your desire to observe privileged people and the hired help behaving badly.    

White wrote more than a dozen novels but until now only his only opus to reach the screen was the screenplay of director Jim Sharman’s The Night, the Prowler and that was in 1978. The Eye of the Storm was published in 1973, the same year White became the first Australian to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. I’ve not read that book but I suspect it’s symptomatic of why his work has largely been regarded as too challenging by filmmakers: Almost all the characters are highly flawed and disagreeable, perhaps reflecting White’s misanthropy.

Adapted by Judy Morris, the film features Rampling as Mrs. Elizabeth Hunter, the formidable but ailing matriarch of a highly dysfunctional family. Bedridden in her palatial home in Sydney’s Centennial Park, she’s fussed over by two nurses, a housekeeper and her dutiful solicitor. Her expatriate son Sir Basil (Geoffrey Rush), a London-based actor, and daughter Dorothy (Judy Davis), an impoverished princess in Paris whose French husband abandoned her, make the pilgrimage to her deathbed.

It’s readily apparent that her ungrateful offspring see their main mission as ensuring they get their hands on her considerable inheritance. And that Mrs. Hunter has long had troubled relationships with both, although she dotes on her son and calls her daughter ‘Pigeon.’ In turn, brother and sister turn on each other.

Rampling is chillingly real as an imperious, cruel and manipulative dragon lady although only when Mrs. Hunter approaches death, and when she flashes back to her younger self and the events leading to the violent storm, does she evoke any sympathy.  

Davis has spent much of her career playing neurotic, uptight and intense characters so Dorothy fits her like a glove, and one can fully understand why she mourns her “barren life”. Considering that Rampling is nine years older than Davis, the former’s make-up effects are so good they are convincing as mother and daughter.

It may not be a stretch for Rush to affect the airs of a vain but insecure thespian but he also superbly conveys Sir Basil’s abiding loneliness and inability to express love or affection.  

Gaden, too, is fine as the family’s lawyer whose loyalties are conflicted, at one point exploding with rage. As his wife, Nevin is utterly devastating in one scene in which she’s taunted by Mrs. Hunter.

Morse excels in the difficult role of the housekeeper Lotte, a Holocaust survivor who delights in dressing up and singing and dancing cabaret numbers for her amused employer. However, the motivation for a horrifying incident late in the narrative remains murky.

Alexandra Schepisi, the director’s daughter, demolishes any suggestions of nepotism with a poignant performance as Flora, a lonely but calculating nurse who seeks to exploit Sir Basil.

Colin Friels has an amusing cameo as a scheming, randy politician and aspiring Prime Minister clearly modelled on Bob Hawke (even down to their Oxford degrees), who lunges at Dorothy in the back of his chauffer-driven car.

Melinda Doring’s sumptuous production design and Ian Baker’s rich cinematography are other plusses but Paul Grabowsky’s jaunty, jazz-influenced score sometimes jars with the film’s shifting moods.

Set in 2041, Alex Garel is a well-known robot programmer who after 10 years returns to his home town to work in his old university when his friend Julia brings job like programmer in a project to create a new line of robot child. There Alex meets his brother David, Lana (Alex’s former love and actual David’s wife), and Eva, Alex’s 10-years-old niece. Looking for inspiration Alex asks help Eva to be the muse of the new robot, watching her attitude and behavior the time they are together, making emotional tests to configure its personality. The relation with his niece creates doubts in Alex about to finish the project and wake up old feelings about Lana, at the same time that he starts to suspect that perhaps the lovely and imaginative Eva hidden an important secret about Lana and himself.      Daniel Radcliffe ably sheds his Harry Potter persona very nearly instantaneously in "The Woman in Black," a shiveringly handsome adaptation of the 1983 novel by Susan Hill. Pitting one unwelcome visitor against a ghostly mansion of horrors is a formula older than movies themselves, but director James Watkins (he of 2008's chilling "Eden Lake") exhibits such an adroit know-how for scaring the pants off his audience that it doesn't matter. With just a couple of exceptions where he tips his hand a little too obviously toward spelled-out manipulation, Watkins keeps things absorbingly creepy in a low-key fashion until just the right moments when he's ready to pounce. When he does, watch out. It has been a while since a film caused the hair on my legs to stand up on end. "The Woman in Black" achieves this more than once.

Wahyu (16 tahun) memiliki kemampuan luar biasa dalam bermain sepakbola. Ia tinggal di Desa Langitan di lereng gunung Bromo bersama ayahnya seorang penjual minuman hangat di kawasan wisata gunung api itu, dan ibunya.

Demi membahagiakan orang tuanya, Wahyu memanfaatkan keahliannya dalam bermain bola dengan menjadi pemain sewaan dan bermain bola dari satu tim desa ke tim desa lain dengan bantuan Hasan, pamannya. Sayangnya Pak Darto, ayah Wahyu sangat tidak menyukai apa yang dilakukan anaknya.

Suatu hari saat Wahyu bermain bola dengan rekan-rekannya, keahlian istimewanya tak sengaja dilihat oleh Coach Timo yang tengah hiking bersama Matias di lereng Bromo. Coach Timo kemudian menawari Wahyu untuk datang ke Malang dan menjalani tes bersama Persema Malang.

Sayangnya, berbagai ujian dalam meraih kesempatan emas bermain bersama Irfan Bachdim dan Kim Kurniawan di Persema mendapat banyak halangan. Selain harus memilih antara cintanya kepada Indah dan impiannya untuk bermain bola di jenjang yang lebih tinggi, Wahyu juga harus mampu meyakinkan Pak Darto. Belum lagi ternyata Hasan memiliki kepentingannya sendiri terhadap Wahyu.

Selain berbagai rintangan yang harus ia hadapi, layaknya seorang pemain bola sebelum mencetak gol, Wahyu juga harus menghadapi tantangan terakhir dari dirinya sendiri. Sebuah penyakit yang biasa menyerang anak-anak usia enam belas tahun seperti Wahyu.

Wanita keempat adalah Lastri (Tizza Radia) yang sampai saat ini belum hamil, tapi Lastri memiliki Hadi (Verdi Solaiman), suaminya yang sangat setia. Wanita kelima adalah Lili (Olga Lidya), wanita hamil satu ini selalu mendapatkan perlakuan kasar dari suaminya namun Lili selalu menyangkal suaminya melakukan ini dengan sengaja. Wanita keenam adalah Ratna (Intan Kieflie), seorang wanita yang bekerja keras demi mendapatkan uang untuk kelahiran anaknya nanti. Ratna memiliki Marwan (Achmad Zaki) sebagai suaminya yang seringkali pulang larut karena harus lembur dengan pekerjaannya.
